Pick My Secret Santa

Can you add someone to Secret Santa after the draw

Yes. Two honest ways, and what each one costs.

Start your draw

Free. No sign-up. About 2 minutes.

Way one: draw again

Every secret kept. The cost is new links.

Way two: a volunteer swaps

One secret spent: the volunteer tells you their match.

The short answer

Yes, someone can join after the draw.

There are two honest ways, and only two.

Way one keeps every secret. Draw the whole group again.

Way two spends one secret. A volunteer swaps their match.

There is no way to add just one link to a finished draw.

Way one: draw the whole group again

  1. Add the new name to the group.
  2. Draw the whole group again.
  3. Every match is drawn fresh.
  4. Send only the new set of links.
  5. Old links still show the old draw.

The seal stays whole. This way costs no secret at all.

Tell the group only that the draw ran again.

Way two: swap in a volunteer

One person gives up their match.

The new person takes that match.

The volunteer buys for the new person instead.

The old match gets a new Santa.

Three matches change. The group hears nothing.

The price: the volunteer tells you their match.

You set the swap up by hand, so you learn those matches too.

One corner of the seal is spent.

Which way fits

Nobody has bought a gift yet? Way one. It costs nothing but new links.

Gifts are bought and links are out? Way two. Only three matches move.

Nobody will volunteer? Back to way one. Those are the two honest ways.

Common questions

Can I just add one more link?

No. A finished draw has no way to add one link. Pick one of the two ways on this page instead.

If we draw again, do the old links stop working?

No. Links you already sent still work and show the old draw. Send only the new set, so nobody follows an old match.

Does the volunteer way break the secret?

Partly. The volunteer tells the organiser their match, and the organiser learns those matches too. The rest of the group hears nothing.

How many matches change in the volunteer swap?

Three matches change. The group hears nothing about which three.
